First official day of summer

Good morning everyone! Oh wait - it's past noon.... but it feels like morning to me since I got to SLEEP IN today!!! Today is the first "official" day of my summer vacation and I could not be happier about that!!

I was up later than normal last night, so I slept in until about 9:30. After spending too much time reading blogs and checking my own, I finally got out the door for a run around 10:30. Today was scheduled to be 3 miles, so I ran up to usual "3 mile stretch" which goes up and down Michigan Ave. About halfway into my run, I ran into my friend Vanessa so I stopped for a few minutes to chat. I can't pretend that I didn't enjoy the quick break :) since it was hotter than I expected and I was getting a bit tired from the heat! Vanessa just graduated from nursing school this weekend - congrats Vanessa!!

The run was a bit more tiring than it should have been - but I've found that often the SHORTER runs are much more taxing than the longer runs are! Typically I feel like the first 3-4 miles of a run are a bit boring and tiresome, but once I hit 4 miles that's when I really start to pick up my pace, my energy increases, and I sometimes/sometimes not get more of that "runners high" going on.

Once I got home, I made another Green Monster (I would love to be able to connect you to my previous post about this via some fancy "link", for those of you who want to know more about the GM, but I'm still trying to work out the technological kinks here!) The GM was deeeeeelicious. Even though it's already lunchtime, so far that's all I've really wanted to eat so far today.

I also did some crunches while watching a DVRed episode of the Next Food Network Star. I didn't catch the first episode so I'm a bit behind and am not quite attached to the characters yet, but I'm sure I'll catch up soon! I also plan to walk to the grocery store later so that will be a bit more exercise for the day :) Has anyone been following this show? I need a new summer show to be hooked on - aside from the Bachelorette! Any suggestions?

  1. You know me, i'm a huge fan of the GM! Even though mine was purple today!

Just curious- during your training, how often do you take walking breaks when you are running. Example - yesterday during my 5.5 mile run I took two breaks (probably about 30sec-1 min each)- and they were on hills. Do you think this will mess with my half marathon that I have coming up? I'm a believer that it's OK to take walking breaks if/when you need them.

What do you think? Do you take them?
